Hi Mike! What technology are you using for your virtual conference?
Joanne Barry
01:13:25
Judy- As sponsors of events using interactive technology.

I would love to know strategy for budgeting for an association whose only revenue is from membership dues. We don’t really have events that generate revenue, and we have no idea how to estimate how many members we may lose because of the downturn. Our budget is approved in early September, and our renewal period is November-December for the following year.
Holly Koenig - NYSAE
01:15:05
Michael -- your LONG TERM strategy is to diversify your revenue. Years and years ago associations would rely on membership dues, typically 70% of revenue. Your goal now is to shift that. 30% or less from dues.
Rick Eisenman
01:16:08
whats a facebook takeover?
Michael Morgenthal
01:16:23
Thanks Holly. Does NYSAE offer any sort of roadmap for creating events like this? We have 1 annual event but it operates at a loss.
Holly Koenig - NYSAE
01:16:28
To build new "buckets" for revenue, it's important to look holistically.....think about all your assets...offerings..
Judy Sanford Guise
01:17:56
Agreed. but... a city cannot generate revenue of we’re not there.
Laura Fredricks
01:18:18
I agree with Holly here AND do not drop all the things you are doing now that are working for you. LISTEN to your customers and clients they may not want all the things you offered them before. Less is more and it will drive UP your revenue streams!
Holly Koenig - NYSAE
01:19:15
Michael, take advantage of the NYSAE benefit, OFFICE HOURS, where our team of experts will sit with you. I know you're an organizational member. We'd be more than happy to counsel.
Annette Homan
01:19:22
RIMS always offers a membership discount at our annual event...in the past we used 100 or 150 off but this past week we offered 25% off which is a similar amount.....the response was larger by just offering a different. We connected it with the information our non-members need to come out of the pandemic.
Michael Morgenthal
01:19:48
Thanks

From Joe Neri at NPQ: When time is crunched and resources are threatened, organizations tend to fall into old patterns of decision-making. They tighten decision-making circles (not inclusive) and put blinders on to questions of who is harmed and who benefits (not equitable). We need to constantly evaluate our commitment to including and being accountable to diverse voices on our teams. Doing so helps ensure we are not only responding quickly but responding equitably. The people who we invite into conversations—not just for their presence, but for their insights—represents a Trust Contract with both staff and clients. We are asking them to trust us to hear their voices, represent their concerns, and respect their perspectives.
Ria Davis
01:23:14
Very difficult to help leadership see the opportunity in a crisis when fear and “old patterns of decision-making” are taking over the conversations.
Christy Dancause
01:23:19
The breakout rooms in zoom have been great for us to allow our members to have small group discussions, which right now, is so valuable to them. We've also tried a speed dating type format to help members meet a lot of people in a virtual event- all through zoom breakouts, very low cost to facilitate.
Bobby Blumefeld, CAE
01:23:24
This is a great opportunity for Association Exec’s to get acceptance for new initiatives….We have moved from evolutionary to revolutionary change. Boards are looking to you for new thinking.

Boards - my mantra - "Take the Best, Leave the Rest" it is THE TIME to evaluate who you WANT on your board. If they cannot help you now it speaks volumes. Do a board matrix what skills are you missing then find that talent!
Holly Koenig - NYSAE
01:26:25
Excellent idea Laura! We need innovation!
Christy Dancause
01:27:08
I had a mentor say, this is the time to take risks. If they don't work, you can blame it on the pandemic! It's a unique environment right now to try new things and transform our organizations quickly vs. the slower association decision making process in a more predictable climate.
Bobby Blumefeld, CAE
01:28:09
Some past ideas were too soon for their time. 12 years ago I created a virtual conference where each attendee could walk into a digital virtual conference that looked just like a convention center. You could see each booths (sponsors or industry companies)..click on their information, chat directly, and ask questions…you could walk to a breakout session and watch a speaker talk and ask questions live or watch a recorded session….it was too soon for its time….you could meet others attending as a digital image…to early then but now sounds very relevant.
Michael Weamer
01:31:24
Our Board was initially stunned....their own life, their own health, their own business. They initially looked to staff to lead more than ever and we have built a team that could do so. They also looked for our Executive Committee to monitor and make immediate decisions. Now, much more balance.
John sheffield
01:32:32
You are all focusing on "virtual." My posiition is to get groups to hopefully book events , trainings, conferences at our Conference Center (which is attached to one of our hotels).I am worried listening to this conversation that I may be seeing the "death" of this industry.we are also 3/4 of the way through the buildig of an indoor waterpark connecte to our sister hotl located right next door. All that being said: I truly believe there is nothng like literal person to peson ineraction
Sarah Patterson
01:33:26
I feel your pain Karen—my board is disengaged too.
Lois Miller
01:33:53
John, all my associations want the events to become live moving forward. The networking and education is invaluable. We just understand that it may not be as quick as we would like
Michael Weamer
01:34:20
John S. This too shall pass. Don't fill the pool yet but we have come back before and will come back again.
Barbara Silverstone
01:34:23
i am hoping that people will be anxious to get out and see people in person again when they are able to. We rescheduled our conference for the end of OCtober and I hope people will want to attend (assuming we are able to). We will probably also live stream it for those who can't travel.
Jane Male
01:34:53
I think we will be looking at a blend of meetings in the future. I believe and my associations believe in face to face.
Wonder Woman

Agree! We'll be back and better before. Think about after 9-11. Took a while........
Kimberly Unger
01:35:13
John, my members very much want live events. That is the value that they see in being part of the Association. I hope it comes back sooner rather than later.
Rita Lopez

I would add that while I believe in-person will come back, the value to the attendee must be high between budget, time, health concerns, we will all need a strong value statement.

We created a weekly newsletter focused on issues related to COVID-19, but focusing on resources that our members can use. We also are launching a marketing initiative our members can take advantage of called TourYourOwnCity that will market tours to NY-area people for when we are allowed outside again but before travel picks up.

Communicating with members where we're at and what working on. We also pivoted to online virtual chapter meetings. To help us achieve success we engaged a 'guru' to help us strategize, orchestrate and execute these experiences. Trained our chapter leaders and leadership to build a roadmap for the future.
