Sharon Mendelaoui
34:15
I love coblocks
Ursula Maxwell-Lewis
34:18
Good morning from Surrey, British Columbia
Talek Nantes
34:48
won't so many plugins slow down your site?
Anna McManus
35:30
Hi all - just a reminder that questions will be addressed towards the end of the webinar, but please keep them coming!
Keryn Means
35:31
Talek— you don’t use ALL of these plugins. These are OPTIONS when you are working with Gutenberg.
Mary Chong
37:25
The Yoast ‘How to and FAQ are really good
Keryn Means
39:18
LOVE ASTRA!!! All of my sites are on that theme.
Lee Foster
40:24
Newspaper?
Keryn Means
43:29
oh my gosh! Was so confused when that update happened. So glad to get my left sidebar back!
Talek Nantes
45:49
IfI start using Gutenberg, what happens to my other posts that were in classicWP?
Mary Chong
46:04
Sorry Michael - where do we install the bitty custom colour code? did you say into our functions php?
Keryn Means
46:26
MARY- yes, in the functions php in your backend.
Keryn Means
46:32
(I wrote that one down!)
Mary Chong
46:44
Thanks Keryn!
Keryn Means
47:32
MARY- the link he has basically has the code you need to find and then you switch out the HEX colors
Mary Chong
47:52
Yes - I understand - I just wasn’t sure where to add the code
Keryn Means
48:15
cool!
Tamara Gruber
49:37
Is there a way to insert a symbol (like a trademark or copyright symbol, international currency symbol, etc) within a paragraph block?
Gary Arndt
50:42
@talek old posts are in what is called a “Classic” block, which works just like old blocks did. You can convert/update those posts with one click. Very easy. I’ve updated 100s of old posts.
Mary Jo Manzanares
51:55
LOVE Reusable blocks!
Keryn Means
52:14
@MJ- ditto! Has made my life SO MUCH better and easier.
Tonya Fitzpatrick
52:17
How do you convert the reusable block to an editable block?
Keryn Means
52:36
Tonya- you can just click on your reusable block and an edit button will show up.
Gary Arndt
52:38
You can edit a reusable block. The edits will just show up everywhere you used it
Mary Chong
52:45
Agree resusable blocks are a big time saver
Michele Herrmann
52:45
Can we access this webinar for future reference?
Keryn Means
52:51
MICHELE- YES!
Keryn Means
52:55
We are recording it.
Nora Dunn
53:00
By grouping blocks together it also means ads won’t show up in between the blocks within a group
Michele Herrmann
53:02
Thank you.
Mary Chong
53:24
@nora that’s a great tip - I never thought of that
Gary Arndt
53:26
I use reusable blocks for custom author footers. I have a special one for my UNESCO pages and a separate one for my national park pages.
Anna McManus
53:30
Yep! It'll be posted on https://satw.org/covid-19-and-travel-implications-webinar/
Michele Herrmann
53:39
Thanks
Keryn Means
54:03
I have one for my affiliate disclosure. And several for my DC niche site with planning tips to add into posts as needed.
Larissa Milne
57:45
I use a reusable block for my newsletter signup option at the bottom of posts.
Irvina LEW
59:28
What (URL) to get on line to wordcamps?
Mary Chong
59:53
which plugin did Michael say that includes alert + icon - in his hotel example?
Gary Arndt
59:54
I host at Kinsta
Mary Chong
01:00:31
Thanks
Lee Foster
01:01:05
Does Gutenberg work with Newspaper theme?
Tamara Gruber
01:01:15
Would stackable have a good columns block for pages?
Mary Chong
01:02:10
I’ve been having issues with multi-column blocks looking good on desktop but then displaying oddly in mobile
Tamara Gruber
01:02:58
Favorite block for tables where you can alternate colors by row or column?
Mary Chong
01:03:08
Im on WP Core - not using any additional gutenberg plugins
Liz Campbell
01:03:10
Im using an old theme - should I update to one that is more modern. Itès working fine but wondering if that would be wise.
Debra Schroeder
01:03:13
When using a table in a post, what type block would you recommend?
Larissa Milne
01:03:22
There had been a question earlier (not me, but I’m also curious) about inserting symbols/characters. . . do you still have to switch back to “classic” editor to do this?
Mary Chong
01:03:29
Perfect - Thank you
Lee Foster
01:03:33
Will working with Classic remain an option?
Liz Campbell
01:04:30
2011
Keryn Means
01:05:12
LIZ- are they still updating your theme?
Liz Campbell
01:05:23
not sure
Keryn Means
01:05:44
LIZ- if they haven’t updated it in years, I’d say change it. A lot has changed since 2011
Liz Campbell
01:06:01
yeah....sigh!
Gary Arndt
01:06:23
To everyone, if you aren’t using blocks, I’d recommend to start experimenting with it. All your old posts will be fine. Once you get a better feel for it, then you can make the move
Tamara Gruber
01:07:11
I use more international currency, degree symbol, ™, etc
Liz Campbell
01:07:13
Iève been using blocks ith mine but sometimes frustrating - canèt find stuff
Larissa Milne
01:07:16
I was thinking more of symbols, such as a “copyright” or “trademark” symbol
Larissa Milne
01:07:44
Yep, I’m thinking along the same lines as Tamara
Sharon Mendelaoui
01:07:54
So is it ok to have both Gutenberg and Coblocks installed - do you recommend this?
Talek Nantes
01:09:14
How can u have both G'berg and classic together?
Irvina LEW
01:10:22
is there a way to take often used symbols like the Euro sign and add it to Insert or some shortcut???
Liz Campbell
01:11:34
In Gutenberg, you can add photos directly. Should you use photo library to add photos with all the infoÉ
Larissa Milne
01:12:03
I’m currently using Gutenberg without any additional plug-ins. Was curious to hear which those in the group here have used, and how they like them.
Beth Reiber
01:12:40
I have years of classic posts before going to blocks. Can I leave those classic posts? If not, is there a way to convert all of them at once?
Mary Chong
01:13:03
I’ve been having an issue with Alt text for images. If I add the new image inside the gutenberg block it doesn’t add the alt text onto the image (as seen in the media library) but the alt text appears in the actual post
Larissa Milne
01:13:12
Which Gutenberg plugin . . .yep--sortty
Tamara Gruber
01:13:46
Liz - if you double click on the photo once you insert it or drag it in, you can then open it in the media library and add the alt text and caption
Gary Arndt
01:13:52
@liz you can use photos from your media library in WordPress, or from a URL. I use everything from a URL
Liz Campbell
01:14:21
Thanks Tamara Gruber
Tamara Gruber
01:14:41
I only convert them as I update old posts. i probably still have some in classic.
Liz Campbell
01:14:45
Gary, how from a URLÉ
Gary Arndt
01:15:02
There is an option in an image block for a URL. Very easy
Liz Campbell
01:15:03
Sorry I have a weird thing happening with my keyboard
Liz Campbell
01:15:18
okay will check it
Tonya Fitzpatrick
01:15:28
How laborious is the conversion process when moving posts from classic?
Gary Arndt
01:15:32
@Mary Alt text is a problem. You can get around it for now by converting the image block to html, adding the alt text, then converting back
Gary Arndt
01:15:59
@tonya it can be converted with one click assuming you don’t want to do any further editing
Tamara Gruber
01:16:07
yeah, alt text doesn’t stick
Mary Chong
01:16:22
So @gary you are experiencing the same thing?
Tamara Gruber
01:16:42
if you add in the sidebar / block. Now I double click the photo to add the alt text to the media library so it stays with that photo
Gary Arndt
01:17:01
@Mary Yes. They need to fix that
Keryn Means
01:17:29
QUESTIONS: starting to wrap it up gang, so shout them out.
Mary Chong
01:17:37
@gary I though ti was something I was doing wrong. Thanks
Tamara Gruber
01:17:40
No follow - edit the link to open in a new tab. Then edit HTML to switch no referrer to no follow or sponsored.
Tamara Gruber
01:18:10
thanks!
Melvin Böcher
01:18:13
