Claire, well done on the blood drive! I’m a longtime blood donor and avid Canadian Blood Services volunteer. One donation can save three lives. So important! Keep up the good work!

I also work for a DMO in a suburban destination (Tualatin Valley, west of Portland, Oregon) and we also had the very first reported case of COVID in the state.

Oh wow… that’s rough.

I love that story of travel writers stepping up, totally switching gears and helping promote their own towns.

Happy new year to Frisco! May it spread.

The new year can’t come soon enough, eh?

Wesley, well done on all your community outreaches. More critical these days than some people realize. Hope your new year brings many blessings

For outdoors-focused destinations that may have seen a big increase in visitors to their trails, beaches, waterways, etc., do check out the Recreate Responsibly educational campaign, which encourages sustainable travel in outdoor environments, with an additional focus on safety during COVID. https://www.recreateresponsibly.org/

Could also be a story concept to work into a story for Actives writing about adventure travel/outdoors.

To Kay’s observation about visitor behavior: I remember well working for a major outdoor attraction (a theme park) where the demonstrated visitor attitude was, “I’m on vacation, so I can’t get hurt.” I once hustled a woman pushing a stroller off an active railroad track AFTER the crossing bar was down. It’s a challenge dealing with the public. :-)

Kay, incredible business juggling act! My heart goes out to your area. Takes courage to stay positive - but, hang in there!

Thank you, Ursula. It has been an adventure …

I’ve been trying to find story ideas that show safe activities/destinations. Most have been outdoor recreation. Part of my thrust is to tell readers to find places near them of similar nature.

Are there any programs or initiatives CVBs have taken to mitigate the struggles of 2020 that have been so successful, you'll keep them in 2021 and beyond?
Stephanie Fermin

I’d like to hear from some of the west coast CVBs on what they have been doing since we’ve been more closed than the South and East

I will be talking about sustainable tourism in a PD session at the convention. So, curious: many destinations have now embraced more sustainable travel policies as a function of what COVID has taught travelers. Are you embracing sustainability?
Larry Bleiberg
01:24:56
Do you anticipate any long term changes - businesses or strategies that will change in the long term? Practices that won’t return?
Claire Koenig, VISIT Milwaukee
01:26:01
I think expanded outdoor dining isn't going away in Milwaukee anytime soon. From what I've heard, area restaurants and breweries are scrambling to get a hold of outdoor heat sources to help them stay open through the upcoming cold months.
Rob Gard
01:27:05
Like the light show idea, Wesley -- interest in outdoor options will continue a long time

People are so housebound that I’ve started sharing novels based in interesting destinations to encourage them to consider exploring ‘literary’ destinations in the future. Travelling vicariously inspires many future journeys.
Ethan Gelber
01:29:40
Nice. Thank you for sharing, Connie.

Ethan, our area was making great progress on sustainability efforts, but COVID caused some setbacks, especially in reducing single use plastics.
Ethan Gelber
01:31:34
Yes, I’m hearing that a lot, Kay. But there are a lot of policy changes that many places are pursuing to mitigate against overtourism and climate change.

That’s great about losing the group FAM trips. I never saw any value in those, nor most of the stories that came from them.

We're doing the same as Visit Frisco. We're letting them explore on their own, rather than with an tour escort.
