What is Mary's next book? and does she have a favorite book?

What does it take to "kill your darlings"--in other words, taking out things you really like? What frame of mind do you have to have to do that? Is it like cleaning out closets--do it only when you're in a bad mood?

Does it ever feel cringe-y to go back and read something you've written and think, "Oh, God, what was I thinking?" If so, how do you deal with that? Because it's forever.
